Emergency Sessional Instructional Assistant - HIS244H1 - Early Modern Europe, 1648-1815

Course Overview: This course will survey the history of Europe from the Thirty Year’s War to the Napoleonic Empire. We will explore the principal themes which transformed Europe during this period: the birth of the modern nation-state; the increasing scale of warfare; the scientific revolution and the Enlightenment; the emergence of capitalist economies; the consolidation of transatlantic colonial empires; and the French Revolution. Students will read a range of primary and secondary source materials; attendance at lectures, participation in tutorials, course reading, and writing are all required components for this course.

Dates of Appointment: January 1, 2025 – April 30, 2025

Qualifications: Minimum M.A. in History required: good knowledge of subject matter. Previous experience or training with Quercus is an asset.

Duties:

  1. Attend lectures
  2. Lead tutorials
  3. Grade assignments and exams
  4. Consult with supervisor/students
  5. Invigilate final exams
  6. Other duties as needed in consultation with instructor

Estimated Course Enrolment: 80 students

Estimated Hours per Position: Approximately 192 hours

Lecture Schedule: Monday 5:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Tutorial Schedule: Monday 7:00 PM - 8:00 PM, Tuesday 4:00 PM - 5:00 PM, Tuesday 5:00 PM - 6:00 PM, Tuesday 6:00 PM - 7:00 PM

Rate of Pay: $52.26 per hour plus 4% vacation pay

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.
